NEWS FROM FRANCE….

In February 2013, the French National Authority for Health launched a new  clinical practice guideline for the glycaemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes. The last recommendation (released in 2006) was outdated ( new treatments like incretins have been approved since then). Furthermore, this recommendation was withdrawn in 2011 after court found potential bias among authors.

Similarly to those from EASD and ADA, the French 2013 guideline stresses the need for individualizing the treatment for each patient, and put the patients’ desires, abilities and tolerance at the centre of the decision-making process.

More interestingly, this guideline provides 2 innovative tools aimed at increasing its appropriation. The first is targeted toward the GPs. It is an online decision-tree (http://ics.upmc.fr/RecosDoc/diabete/Interface/frontal.html) that gives some recommended therapeutic proposals according to the patient’s profile. The second tool is intended for patients. It is a  video aimed at increasing the patient-physician’s dialogue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT21wCQtsSw) .
