The Future of Primary Health Care in Europe 11-13 October 2006 Utrecht, The Netherlands

....by Imre Rurik, Hungary, PCDE Exec:
A three day long conference, held in Utrecht, focussed on current challenges (and possible solutions) in primary care and laid out future thoughts on care provision in Europe. The conference was organized by Professsor Jan de Maeseneer (Gent), chairman of the European Forum for Primary Care. The main contributors were: -Julius Centre, UMC Utrecht -National Association of Organized Primary Care (LVG) -The Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (Nivel) -International Network of Integrated Primary Care (INIC) -European Forum for Primary Care (EPHA)
On the first day a short overview of Dutch Healthcare system was presented by Professor Guus Schrijvers (Julius Centre UMC). Thereafter participants visited the city of Leidsche Rijn, adjacent to Utrecht, which was established 6-8 years ago. It has 90,000 inhabitants and is constantly being developed. The health centers of the city were introduced by the director dr. Rob van Damme. On the second and third day the sessions were held in the Educatorium of Utrecht University. These included presentations and round table discussions by experts on strengths and weaknesses of PC in the different EU countries. Two members of PCDE Exec. (Johan Wens, Belgium and Imre Rurik, Hungary) took part on discussion of Position Paper on Diabetes Care in Europe. The latest version is readable on: www.euprimarycare.org The aim of the forum was to define the problems of PC systems, and develop proposals for health policy makers. These proposals ,however, are sometimes not always afforded the respect they merit by politicians.

12th regional conference WONCA Europe Florence (Italy) 2006 August, 27th – 30th
download powerpoint presentation (5MB) Dr Eugene Hughes and Dr Johan Wens presented the ‘State of the Art’ lecture on diabetes at the WONCA Europe conference in Florence on 28th August 2006. Entitled ‘Health care Differences in Primary Care – challenges and barriers for optimal type 2 diabetes care’, it focussed on the differences in healthcare delivery between the UK and Belgium, and how that might influence care for people with diabetes.
Striking differences were highlighted, especially in relation to patient ‘lists’ and the use of practice nurses and data collection. The UK system was portrayed as target-driven, whereas the Belgian system offered maximum choice for the patient, whilst suffering from lack of structure.
As the management of diabetes falls increasingly into the primary care domain, there is a need to understand more fully the differences in health care delivery across the member states of the EU. PCDEurope has commissioned an in-depth survey to include demographics, prescribing, and access. Preliminary results will be available at the 2007 conference in Amsterdam.
A full copy of the presentation is now available.
...by Imre Rurik, Hungary, PCDE Exec:
The regular yearly regional conference of WONCA was held in Italy in Florence, between 27-30 August. The main motto of conference was: Toward medical renaissance, bridging the gap between biology and humanities. More then 3000 family physicians from 65 countries gathered in the medieval Fortezza da Basso where a modern conference center was built some years ago, behind the historic walls, with excellent inside communication system and computer networks. Many hundred oral presentations were held and posters hung up. The great number of Italian participants could enjoy an advantage of simultanious translation from English to Italian. The participants came not only from the countries of Old Continent but also from America, Australia and Asia. The main topics were: Researches on Biology, Caring for the world , Education, Quality, Researches in different fields related to medicine, Risk and safety, State of the art lesions (on COPD and diabetes). The recent state and advances of diabetes research in the primary care was presented by Eugene Hughes UK, (President PCDE) and Johan Wens, Belgium (PCDE Exec). As participants and as presenter my subjective criticisms were: -high registration fee (530-710 EUR), unfortunately by each WONCA conferences -so many parallel sessions (recently 20-22), -very hard to get a good overlook on different topics.
