Dr. Johan Wens (Treasurer)

Johan Wens is general practitioner in Belgium since 1986. He works, together with his wife in a GP duo-practice in the northern region of Antwerp.
Besides, he also is senior research assistant at the University of Antwerp, Department of Family Practice, where he prepares a PhD thesis on bottlenecks for
optimal diabetes treatment. He is GP co-ordinator of the “Diabetes Project Flanders”, a shared quality improving and CME project with the Flemish association of GPs (WVVH) and the Flemish Diabetes Association (VDV), resulting from the Saint Vincent Declaration. He is a board member of the workgroup on chronic illnesses (part diabetes) of the National Institute for Illness and Accident Assurance (RIZIV/INAMI) which convinced the Minister of Health to introduce a diabetes passport in Belgium since 2003.
Johan Wens is author of several papers in national and international peer reviewed journals and reviews manuscripts for a number of highly valued journals. He is leading author of a new validated “guideline for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes type 2” in Belgium (to be presented in October 2005).
He is examiner for the Inter University Centre for undergraduate training in General Practice.
As board member of PCD Europe ivzw since 2001 he chaired the Scientific Committee of the last conferences in Paris (2003) and Munich (2004). He finished the constitutions of the organisation which now is an international non-profit organisation in accordance with the Belgian Laws. Since 2005, Januray 1st he is treasurer of PCD Europe ivzw.
