PCDE – 9th International Conference, Amsterdam 2007
2007 sees the 9th PCDE conference on the eve of EASD in Amsterdam. This year, we are proud to announce that we are working with Reed International, who have a dedicated team ensuring a well-structured and well-supported conference. The abstract submissions this year were of a very high standard. Plans are already underway for a special event in 2008 to celebrate our 10th international PCDE conference.

Study Group on Primary Care Diabetology – the EUCCLID study
Our Study Group on Primary Care Diabetology, in collaboration with EASD, has designed an exciting study which aims to look at standards of care in several EU countries, using several investigators. The pilot study to test feasibility is due to launch soon. PCDE is proud to sponsor this activity, and the results are eagerly awaited.
The SWEET project
This project, under the auspices of Professor Thomas Danne, aims to contribute to reducing the burden of diabetes and related costs in Europe by addressing diabetes in children and adolescents. More specifically, the project will aim to improve quality of life outcomes for children with diabetes and their carers, by means of establishing a network of centres of reference for paediatric and adolescent diabetes services. PCDE is proud to be an associated partner in this project.
The OBO project (Obstacles and Outcomes in Diabetes)
The goal of this study is to validate the Diabetes Obstacles Questionnaire that assesses obstacles in living with diabetes. The questionnaire has been constructed based on the data of EUROBSTACLE studying these obstacles in 7 European countries using focus groups and meta-ethnography (Belgium, France, Netherlands, UK, Croatia, Slovenia and Estonia). By July 2007 this project has been enlarged with 5 other European partners – Croatia, Serbia, France, Ireland, and Slovenia. The ultimate goals is to create instruments, based on the questionnaire, to assess obstacles to adhering in people living with type 2 diabetes during medical encounters in the primary, and perhaps secondary care, consultations. For further information, please contact Professor Etienne Vermeire (
etienne.vermeire@ua.ac.be). PCDE supported the OBO study with a research grant.
The IMAGE project
The IMAGE project (Development and Implementation of a European Guideline and Training Standards for Diabetes Prevention) is set to improve the management and reduce the impact of type 2 diabetes across Europe. Effective and immediate primary prevention is essential to lower the burden of type 2 diabetes within the European Union. The 3 year IMAGE project will help to address this through the development of:

  1. European practice-oriented guidelines for the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes
  2. A European curriculum for the training of prevention managers
  3. European standards for quality control in the assessment, monitoring and quality reporting of type 2 diabetes prevention
  4. A European e-health training portal

Led by Dr Peter Schwarz, this project is one of the largest public health projects to be granted funding by the European Commission 2006 Call for proposals. Thirty-two partner organisations are involved in IMAGE, including PCDE.
The EU presidency
In February PCD Europe was invited by IDF Europe and FEND to join them in a political and strategic journey to Lisbon. The meeting was hosted by the Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal (APDP). We were invited to introduce our organizations and present our objectives to the Portuguese political circles. Portugal would become president of the European Union on July 1st and this would be a great opportunity to put Diabetes as a priority topic on the Health agenda. Michael Hall (IDF-Europe), Anne Felton (IDF Global & FEND) and Xavier Cos (PCD Europe) had several meetings where our organizations stressed this idea and spread the IDF-led campaign "Unite for Diabetes".
As a result Diabetes was included in the official program of the Portuguese EU Presidency conference "Health Strategies in Europe" held in Lisbon in July. From this conference the Diabetes Working Group submitted a report with recommendations on an EU strategy for Diabetes & Chronic Disease and inclusion with a specific focus of these diseases within the EU strategic framework. The full report will be available on our website shortly.
The Diabetes Survey – a PCDE project
PCDE has started a survey on diabetes care throughout the EU member states. Comparable key factors are collected through national and international sources, including information on demographics and healthcare systems. But also on healthcare access, drug availability and funding, and so on. The set up is to first collect the basic information and in doing so setting up a reliable information network. From there on we hope to expand our stream of information and clear the picture on Diabetes in Europe.
Reports on the project will be referenced, updateable and dynamic, and create a clear picture not only of prevalence, but also of the patient experience.
